Called “rice wine” but brewed like beer, it is steadily gaining popularity in Bangkok, and we’re all about it. Bangkok’s nightlife scene is known for fine whisky, cold craft beer, and fancy cocktails in award-winning bars, but sake can also be found in the city! Here are some places to enjoy quality sake and sake-based cocktails in Bangkok, from fancy, modernized izakayas to small, authentic bars that specialize in this boozy beverage.

Yoshi is a small bar at the corner of Sukhumvit 53 and Thonglor 9 that sells sake by the bottle. You can find different kinds on the menu listed up on the chalkboard behind the bar. If you’re unsure of which one to get, the friendly bar owner Yoshito “Yoppy” Suzuki is always happy to help. Occasionally, the bar also hosts events such as cheese and sake tasting, sushi nights, or live music nights

Apart from their expertise in Yakitori skewers, this modern izakaya located inside a former gambling house in Charoen Krung 28 has plenty of alcoholic drinks to go with its Japanese-inspired grub. They offer craft cocktails, umeshu, and of course, lots of sake options. The bar is co-owned by chef Chet Atkins and photographer Jason Lang, who photographed for a book called “Sake: The History, Stories and Craft of Japan’s Artisanal Breweries.”

Located on the second floor of Rain Hill shopping mall at Sukhumvit 47, Sake Forest is a minimalist liquor store with a surprising variety more than 200 types of sake. You can either buy a bottle to drink at home or grab a seat and try sake by the glass at the store. Prices are as cheap as 100 baht to 150 baht per glass.

Among the best Japanese bars and restaurants in Sathorn 10, Hanakaruta stands out with its decorated floor-to-ceiling wall of bottles of booze. It’s a perfect place to hang out on Friday nights to drink sake and grab tasty bites of sashimi or Nagoya-style deep-fried wings. Their signature sake is the Take Sake which is served from a bamboo bottle at 1,000 baht for 500 ml.
