In the old days, tattoos were common amongst two groups of people in Thailand: Criminals and gang members, and monks who get tattooed to protect themselves and others with spiritual sacraments. Flash forward to modern-day 2019, and tattoos still remain a controversy in our beloved Land of Smiles. The popular Thai ‘Sak Yant’ is known all over the world. Usually performed by a monk, the technique uses one single needle attached to a long bamboo stick. For the Thai male, it is not much different. A lot of young Thai men prefer to stay tattooless, but those who do get tattoos favor meaningful and artsy tattoos. Some like to get Roman numerals or meaningful characters inked, as well as minimalistic (but not super cute) tattoos. For men, the current trend is thinner lines that don’t make them appear rough, rowdy or unapproachable, so the old-style American tattoos with huge black numbers and lines is less sought after.
