A Glimpse Into Bangkok’s Punk Rock Scene With “Higher Learning”/ เจาะซีนดนตรี Punk Rock ในกรุงเทพ กับวงฮาร์ดคอร์ Higher Learning

17 August 2019 - With the release of their new EP called “Lab Rat”, this local hardcore punk band “Higher Learning” is ready to blow your music-loving ears off. Celebrating it with a big blast in “De Commune” in Thonglor’s “Liberty Plaza”, along with other hardcore punk bands such as “LowFat”, “The Greed”, “Whispers” and “Harsh”. That night, the Bangkok punk community all came together, not only to see Higher Learning and listen to their rockin’ rendition of the new songs, but also to let loose and reconnect with fellow punk rock fans. It sure was a crazy Saturday night to say the least, literally out of this world! Thanks to our friends at Punk Rock Bangkok, we got to meet Higher Learning in person before the show, and today, we bring you highlights from the interview.

17 สิงหาคม 2019 - มินิอัลบั้มใหม่ล่าสุดของพวกเขา Higher Learning มีชื่อว่า Lab Rat เป็นดนตรีแนว hardcore punk ที่จะมาระเบิดความมันส์ให้คอดนตรีทั้งหลาย โดยงานนี้จะจัดขึ้นที่ De Commune ณ อาคารลิเบอร์ตี้ พลาซ่า ท้ายซอยทองหล่อ พร้อมร่วมสนุกไปกับกับวงดนตรีสาย hardcore punk อีกมากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น LowFat, The Greed, Whispers และ Harsh สนุกไปกับการแสดงดนตรีสดของมินิอัลบั้มที่มีชื่อว่า Lab Rat ของวง Higher Learning การแสดงสุดบ้าคลั่งที่ได้ทำให้คืนวันเสาร์ของเราเปลี่ยนไปตลอดกาล และในคืนนั้นโชคก็ยังเข้าข้างให้เราได้สัมภาษณ์พวกเขากันแบบตัวต่อตัว วันนี้จึงถือโอกาสขอบคุณเพื่อนอย่าง Punk Rock Bangkok ที่ทำให้เราได้ใกล้ชิดกับวง Higher Learning บทสัมภาษณ์จะสนุกแค่ไหน ไปดูกันเลย!

Do you speak Thai?

Rick: Tom and Po are Thai, James is half, but Martin and I come from England. The both of us only speak Thai to a certain extent. Out of all of us, I would be the worst.

พวกคุณพูดไทยได้ไหม?

ริค: ต๋อมกับโป้ เป็นคนไทย ส่วนเจมส์เป็นลูกครึ่ง แต่ผมกับมาร์ตินมาจากอังกฤษ เราพูดได้แค่นิดหน่อย ภาษาไทยของผมน่าจะแย่ที่สุด

It took these hardcore rockers quite some time to find their style.

Rick: We all have different music that we liked, and we were trying out different things. As an Expat band in a different country, we had (band members) coming and going. Originally 5 members, 2 left. It took us 2 to 3 years to get a solid line up and to start recording this EP. And also, to find a sound that we were going to do. We experimented in lots of kinds of music and finally, we found what we all like to do now. It’s a pretty solid sound, quite unique in Bangkok.
Martin: Just to add onto what Rick said, all of us like different types of heavy music, right. The styles are so diverse. Some of us like pop punk, some like metal, or even hip hop as well. All these different styles and we wanted to bring some of that together, I guess.

ริค: ทุกคนต่างมีสไตล์ดนตรีที่ชอบแตกต่างกัน แต่เราก็ยังลองสิ่งใหม่ๆ อยู่เสมอ ในฐานะของคนต่างชาติที่มาตั้งวงดนตรีในต่างประเทศ มันทำให้สมาชิกในวงไม่คงที่ซักเท่าไหร่ เมื่อก่อนเรามีสมาชิกทั้งหมด 5 คน แต่มี 2 คนที่ลาออกไป จากตอนนั้นเราใช้เวลาอยู่ 2-3 ปีในการตั้งวงดนตรีที่แข็งแกร่งขึ้นมาอีกครั้งจนกระทั้งได้อัดเพลงเซ็ทนี้ แล้วกว่าจะเจอสิ่งที่พวกเราทุกคนรัก สิ่งที่แปลกใหม่ที่เราภูมิใจนำเสนอให้ผู้ชม เราก็ลองถูกลองผิดกันมาเยอะพอสมควร แนวดนตรีที่เราค้นพบเป็นอะไรที่ค่อนข้างแหวกแนวจากสิ่งที่เรามักพบเจอในกรุงเทพฯ
มาร์ติน: คือพวกเราทุกคนชอบดนตรีแนว heavy หนักหน่วง แต่เป็นคนละสไตล์กันนะ บางคนชอบ pop punk อีกคนชอบ metal ไม่ก็ hip hop เป็นแนวที่ไม่เหมือนกันเลย เราเลยอยากลองที่จะนำสไตล์เหล่านั้นมารวมกันและสร้างเป็นดนตรีของพวกเราเอง

Their music sounds angry, but it’s actually optimistic.

Rick: The songs are about fighting the system and fighting corruption, also personal anger. It sounds angry, but it’s optimistic. Haha!
James: And a little bit of fun.
Rick: Like the first song ‘Lab Rat’, it’s about not being a slave to society.
James: There are a lot of little critics, you have to be careful what you say here.

Tell us a bit about the local punk scene, the amazing little communities going on.

James: If you know about hardcore and metal and stuff, it is split into so many genres, so there is an endless spiral that you can go into, looking up different stuff as you go. To explore, you can visit Punk Rock Bangkok, which is kind of the English-language community... they post everything in English, but they kind of like old-school, punk and hardcore. On the Thai side, there is Blast Magazine, one of my favorite magazines in Thailand, totally independent. They do everything, from metal to hardcore to punk to post rock.
Martin: What’s cool about Bangkok, is when a biggish band comes through, you get to see them in such tiny little venues.
James: Yeah, so you see them with 500 to 600 other people in Europe. In Thailand, it’s like 100, maybe 200 people. Sometimes we had to support them, because there was no massive scene.
Martin: So for example “Backtrack”, a Band from the US, was doing like a world tour, I guess. You usually never get to see them in a venue as small as the one they performed at in Bangkok. It’s really cool.
Rick: I go see music for a long, long time and Bangkok, apart from this scene, it tends to be a little of a letdown in certain venues. You go to see some in the Impact Arena and it is shit. And then you go to the small local bands and that’s where you get the real passion in the music.
James: All the bands are great and also the punk scene in Bangkok is pretty thriving. There are gigs pretty much every week.

เจมส์: ถ้าคุณรู้จักดนตรี hardcore หรือ metal ละก็ จริงๆ แล้วมันถูกแบ่งออกมาเป็นหลายๆ ประเภทย่อย หากเข้าไปในวังวนดนตรีสไตล์นี้แล้วก็เหมือนกับมันจะไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด ในกรุงเทพฯ มีกลุ่มๆ นึงที่ตั้งขึ้นมาโดยใช้ภาษาอังกฤษสื่อสารเป็นหลัก โดกลุ่มนี้มีชื่อว่า Punk Rock Bangkok จะเน้นไปทาง punk และ hardcore รุ่นเก๋า Old-school ส่วนฝั่งของไทยก็จะมีนิตยาสารที่ชื่อว่า Blast Magazine เป็นหนึ่งในนิตยสารเล่มโปรดของผมในไทยเลย นิตยาสารที่รวบรวมความเป็นร็อคไว้ในเล่มเดียว ไม่ว่าจะเป็น metal, hardcore, punk หรือแม้แต่ post rock
มาร์ติน: แต่สิ่งที่เจ๋งที่สุดเกี่ยวกับกรุงเทพฯ ก็คือ เวลามีวงดังๆ มาเล่นคอนเสิร์ต คุณสามารถชมดนตรีติดขอบเวทีได้เลย คือพวกเขาแสดงในห้องที่เล็กมาก คนดูได้ใกล้ชิดกับศิลปินดังแบบแทบจะยื่นมือไปแตะเขาได้
เจมส์: ถ้าอยู่ในยุโรปนะ คนดูต้องมีอย่างน้อย 500-600 คนแหละ แต่พอมาเป็นที่นี่คนดูก็เหลือประมาณ 100 ไม่ก็ 200 คน บางครั้งเราก็ต้องสนับสนุนและช่วยพวกเขา เพราะในไทย ดนตรีแนวนี้ยังไม่ได้เป็นที่นิยมมากถ้าเทียบกับแถบตะวันตก
มาร์ติน: เหมือนวง Backtrack ที่มาจากสหรัฐและได้จัดคอนเสิร์ตรอบโลกแบบ World Tour พวกเขาได้มาเล่นที่เมืองไทย คือถ้าเป็นประเทศอื่น ไม่มีทางที่คุณจะได้เห็นพวกเขาเล่นดนตรีในสถานที่ๆเล็กขนาดนี้ได้ คือโคตรอบอุ่น และโคตรเจ๋ง
ริค: ผมได้มีโอกาสไปดูคอนเสิร์ตมาหลายต่อหลายเวทีในกรุงเทพ และถ้าไม่ใช่เป็นดนตรีแนวนี้ บางทีคุณภาพมันน่าผิดหวังนะ บางงานจัดตั้ง Impact Arena ที่เมืองทองอ่ะ แต่โคตรแย่ เทียบกับโชว์จากศิลปินท้องถิ่นจากกรุงเทพบ้านเราเนี่ยแหละ เล็กๆ เลยนะ แสดงในร้านเล็กๆ ถ้าอยากสัมผัสกับความรักในดนตรีจริงๆ ต้องไปโชว์แบบนี้
เจมส์: ทุกวงเป็นวงที่ยอดเยี่ยม นี่เรียกได้ว่าเป็นยุครุ่งเรื่องของชาว punk ในกรุงเทพฯ เลยก็ว่าได้ มีการแสดงดนตรีสดแนวนี้ทุกสัปดาห์เชียวนะ

And as angry as punk rock music sounds, everyone in the Bangkok Punk Scene is a total sweetheart.

Rick: We are very proud of the EP and for me, it is certainly giving me inspiration to carry on and work harder on the band. This is an EP, but we want to do a full-length album. (Bangkok’s Punk Rock scene) is a nice scene to be involved in. As angry as our music is, everyone is a sweetheart. Everyone is very nice, supportive, and kind. At the shows, you see people throwing fists and stuff, but then afterwards they are hugging you and saying sorry that they hit you. Yeah, everyone is lovely and supportive. After most of our shows, people contacted us and asked us, if we were open for some gigs and such. And we really needed it. We felt a lot of support in this community.

ริค: พวกเราภูมิใจมากกับอัลบั้มนี้ สำหรับผมแล้ว ถือเป็นแรงบันดาลใจที่ทำให้สู้ต่อไปและต้องทำให้ดียิ่งกว่าเดิม ถึงแม้นี้จะเป็นเพียงมินิอัลบั้ม แต่เราก็ตั้งใจที่จะทำอัลบั้มเต็มออกมาซักวันหนึ่งและก็ดีใจกับการได้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของซีนดนตรี Punk Rockในกรุงเทพ ถึงแม้ดนตรีอาจจะดูเกรี้ยวกราดไปหน่อยแต่ทุกคนในกลุ่มนี้เป็นคนน่ารักออ่ยโยนนะ ทุกคนใจดีและช่วยเหลือกันและกันตลอด คุณอาจจะเคยเห็นคนชกต่อยกันในคอนเสิร์ตตามเสียงทำนองของเพลง แต่หลังโชว์จบแป๊ปเดียวพวกเขาก็กอดและขอโทษกัน เวลาที่พวกเรามาแสดงดนตรีทีไร คนดูก็จะเข้ามาพูดคุยกับพวกเราและถามเกี่ยวกับการจ้างให้เราไปขึ้นแสดงคอนเสิร์ตตามงานอื่นๆ ฟังแล้วมันรู้สึกชื่นใจ เหมือนกับเราได้รับแรงสนับสนุนจากคนกลุ่มนี้มาโดยตลอด

What about the other bands that will be playing tonight?

Rick: If you like really heavy, beat-down hardcore then we can recommend “Whispers” and “Harsh”. They are holding on records, they’re amazing. We got “The Greed”, straight-up punk, half-Japanese and half-Thai band. Really fun, so watch out for this.
Martin: And then the favorite between us all is “LowFat”.

มาร์ติน: แต่วงโปรดของพวกเราคือ LowFat

LowFat? In one of their shows, the police showed up after two songs.

Rick: We really hoped to get them on tonight. Again, half-Japanese, half-Thai band. They have one of the best live shows. So much energy. Stay for them.
James: They played the best gig that I have been to. It was in a burger bar on Rama 9 and it lasted two songs and the police showed up. The singer was smashing tables, jumping everywhere. The best-ever stage presence.

เจมส์: LowFat เป็นโชว์ที่ดีที่สุดที่ผมเคยดูมาเลย วันนั้นฉันไปที่ burger bar ร้านนึงแถวๆพระราม9 เมื่อเพลงจบไป2เพลงตำรวจก็โพล่มา นักร้องโยนโต๊ะออกไปแล้วก็วิ่งไปทั่ว และนั่นคือการแสดงที่ดีที่สุด

That’s crazy. Let’s get to know you all a bit. What other music do you listen to?

Rick: I love hip hop. James and I—
James: We run a Drum & Bass and Bass Music night as well. Tom here has his own electronic band. He plays funk and love songs.
BangkokHaps: Have you ever written a song about somebody else?
Tom: Haha, yeah, all the time.
James: Yeah, so everyone is into different things, but the overall vibe and atmosphere is like the middle ground: it’s hardcore punk first.

เจมส์: คือ แต่ละคนก็มีความสนใจไม่เหมือนกัน แต่ถ้ามองบรรยากาศรวมๆ แล้วเรากลับมีความคิดที่ตรงกันว่า hardcore punk เป็นแนวดนตรีที่ชอบที่สุด hardcore punk ต้องมาก่อนเสมอ

Movies or Music?

Rick: Depends on the situation, right?
James: I like a good Netflix and Chill. Hahaha!
Tom: I love movies. You get music in the movie, the soundtrack.
James: Tom actually mastered the EP mix, the sound engineering and all that stuff.

Coffee or Tea?

Rick: Oh, coffee.
Tom: Coffee, definitely.
Martin: I need to say tea.

ต๋อม: กาแฟแน่นอน
มาร์ติน: ขอตอบเป็นชาละกัน

Most favorite country?

Rick: Thailand. I’ve recently been to Nepal, that was quite cool too. Po just recently came back from Finland.
Po: Yeah, it was nice, but I would say Estonia. I spend 10 days there as a homeless person. I got kicked out from where I lived in Finland. So, I had to cross the ocean to Estonia. It was a lot cheaper and easier to live.
Rick: But you can’t beat Thailand.

ชอบประเทศไหนมากที่สุด?

ริค: ประเทศไทย แต่ผมก็เพิ่งกลับมาจากเนปาล ที่นั่นก็สวยเหมือนกัน ไม่นานมานี้โป้ก็เพิ่งไปฟินแลนด์มา
โป้: ใช่ มันสวยมาก แต่สำหรับผมคงตอบว่าประเทศเอสโตเนีย ผมใช้เวลาที่นั้น10 วัน อยู่เหมือนกับพวกคนไร้บ้านเพราะถูกไล่ออกมาจากที่ที่อยู่ในฟินแลนด์ ผมเลยต้องข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลไปที่เอสโตเนีย ที่นั่นค่าครองชีพถูกมากแล้วก็อยู่ง่ายด้วย
ริค: แต่ก็สู้ประเทศไทยไม่ได้

In the end, the band is just a group of friends.

Rick: Obviously, we are getting a bit more serious with this EP, but in the end, we are just a group of friends. That’s why we are in this band, that’s why we started. A lot of us have other commitments and busy lives, but in the end of the day this is how we see each other—as friends.
James: Yeah, that’s been the only requirement for the band after some people left, come and have fun. That’s it.

ริค: เอาจริงพวกเราก็เริ่มซีเรียสขึ้นมาหน่อยกับการทำเพลงครั้งนี้ แต่มันก็เหมือนกับการมาเล่นดนตรีกับเพื่อน แม้ว่าพวกเราแต่ละคนต่างก็มีหน้าที่ๆต้องรับผิดชอบในแต่ละวัน แต่ในช่วงสุดท้ายของวันเราก็ยังอยากจะเจอกัน และสร้างศิลปะทางดนตรีด้วยกัน นั่นคือเหตุผลที่เริ่มสร้างวงดนตรีนี้ขึ้นมาด้วยกัน
เจมส์: ใช่เลย คือหลังจากมีคนออกจากวงไป ณ จุดนี้ การมาร่วมวงแล้วสนุกไปด้วยกันเป็นสิ่งเดียวที่เราต้องการจากสมาชิกใหม่
